  • 1.  Blood Draw in babies

    Hello,
Does anyone know how much blood can be drawn on a baby weighing 5 kg? I know babies have 60-80 ml of blood /KG depending on gestation age.

    Thanks

We limit it to 1cc/kg if they are very little (<5kg for sure but we are careful up to 10kg).  We ask the providers to prioritize what they want, and we use microtainers for labs.  There are times we do draw more, but it is usually when there is no choice (based on clinical status) and it will be a onetime lab draw.  It this child is likely to need additional lab draws, we try and spread it out over time.  If it is a child we know is going to be transfused based on chief complaint that may ease our concerns for drawing more than 1cc/kg i.e. an infant with an oncology issue.  Contact me offline if you would like more info.
