  • 1.  Research Articles Pediatric Color Coded Systems

    Hello, fellow educators,

I am trying to assist our ACS liaison in preparing for their next visit to our Level I Trauma facility (Adult and Pediatrics). We use the Handtevy system throughout for peds patients resus. What we need are some current (within last 5 years) research discussing banding of patients (wt correlates with color), color coded carts, inclusion of color coding  in a policy such as MTP, etc. I have found a few articles through JEN; the biggest challenge seems to be current dates. If anyone has suggestions would greatly appreciate it.

    Thanks,

Hi Penny - sorry for the delayed reply - playing nurse/medic @ universal (such a fun role) & teaching CPEN gets in the way of quick replies

so, here's my quick thoughts on your query - disclosure: I've spent the last two years as a consultant for the upcoming 2025 version of the Broselow tape (it's way cool by the way) - so disclosure rendered - however in the past & still currently, I regularly assist dr antevy with some of his EMS/nursing queries however I can - additional disclosure rendered... & now onto your post

    quick moral of the story:

banding: I've seen lots of places do it in ER & inpatient & personally love the idea - as long as in the playroom, kids don't "swap bands" - below is a link to a company (no disclosure) that offers bands that encompass all of the color zones of broselow & handtevy - however, I have not come across any research on this

    https://www.pdchealthcare.com/patient-identification-wristbands/mother-infant-wristbands/pediatric-wristbands?le_product_type=13375

inclusion of color coding in MTP etc: again, great idea - but I have not seen any research on this  - there is research from a while back about color-coding CT scans (again, neat idea), but I've not seen for MTP

color coded carts: this I've seen pretty much everywhere - from er to inpatient to... however, the only article I've come across is from far more than 5 years ago (see attached)

& lastly, weight & color: as part of research for the 2025 tape, the big question always seemingly comes up about color zones/length/does it reflect current ideal body weights (important differentiation - ideal body weight vs actual body weight) - but the most currently available CDC data (ref below), shows that the broselow tape color zones/weights (as well as the handtevy app) reflect the currently available data

hope this helps & as always, please let me know if I may help in any way

    cheers

    scott
