    Greetings

Hoping for insights from the list regarding a question that comes up frequently in cpen reviews as well as via e-mails - The "age old discussion" of BP's & kids- i.e. "do you/should we be taking bp's on all patients, infants to adults, across the lifespan? only if they appear "sick"? difference if "over 2-3 years old"? what do if "it 'aint going to happen (i.e. very unhappy/very active little ones) -

insights always truly appreciated - both research & "real life"

    thanx!

    Scott

Hi- our ED recently implemented a practice of obtaining BP on all infant and children if they are an ESI 1, 2, or 3.

In my experience, you are expected to attempt a BP on every pediatric patient presenting to the ED.  If you are unable to obtain the BP due to patient behavior/combativeness/distress, then this should be documented along with other assessment findings related to circulation or physiologic stability of the patient.
